History

1865: Nashville, TN & The O'Bryan Brothers

Started in 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee by two brothers, George and Joe O'Bryan, the Duck Head brand has since lived through three major wars and survived to tell the tale. The O'Bryan Brothers had a simple idea: Use surplus U.S. Army tents left over from the Civil War to make work garments. This heavy canvas material was known as "duck." George and Joe, both Civil War veterans and avid outdoorsmen, found the name of this fabric fortuitous and chose it for their company moniker. After a snafu at the Trademark and Registration OfficeU.S. Trademark Registration Office, they added the word "Head" and an iconic American brand name was hatched, complete with a mallard logo. The company operated into the late 20th century, producing work clothing such as overalls and denim jackets under the Duck Head brand. The designs were tough, durable, and comfortable. They translated seamlessly from work to play due to the quality materials and classic silhouettes. During WWII, Duck Head even outfitted our brave troops.

1978: David Baseheart and Duck Head

In 1978, then-VP David Baseheart took a chance on surplus fabric. In true O'Bryan Brothers entrepreneurial fashion, Baseheart bought 10,000 surplus yards of a light-colored cotton fabric from a local mill operator. Polyester was king; no one else wanted this khaki fabric known as "chino." Baseheart used an original pant constructed pattern and applied the mallard logo to a bright yellow tag on the back of the pants. The new product took off quickly, and Duck Head Chinos became a Southern wardrobe staple. Baseheart bought the O'Bryan Company in 1985, fostering healthy growth for the Duck Head brand. Up into the late 1990s, Duck Head Chinos were a standard in Southern fashion.

1989: Delta Woodside Industries

In 1989, the brand was purchased by Delta Woodside Industries in an attempt to create a national brand. The product line was expanded by adding woven and knit shirts, shorts, and women's clothing.

1990: Old Dominion Footwear

In the 1990s Old Dominion Footwear of Madison Heights, Virginia began producing Duck Head Shoes.

2001: Tropical Sportswear International

Tropical Sportswear International bought the Duck Head Apparel company in 2001, but went bankrupt in 2005.

2003: Goody's Family Clothing

In 2003, Goody's Family Clothing purchased rights to the Duck Head clothing brand and made it into a private label brand, sold exclusively at Goody's stores.

2009: Ross Sternheimer & Duck Head USA

Streambank LLC sold the brand at auction in 2009. The acquiring business established Duck Head USA, based in Richmond, Virginia, and announced plans to expand the Duck Head brand into a full line of men's, women's and children's apparel and accessories to be sold through various retailers.

2013: Prospect Brands

Prospect Brands LLC purchased the Duck Head brand from the Richmond Group and re-launched the brand out of downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.

2017: Present Day & Oxford Industries, Inc.

Today, Duck Head is owned by Lanier Apparel, a division of Oxford Industries and an international apparel design, sourcing, and marketing company. Their portfolio features a portfolio of owned lifestyle brands, consisting of Tommy Bahama, Lilly Pulitzer, and Southern Tide.
